Paul Rousso (born 1958) is an American contemporary artist, born in Charlotte, North Carolina. His oeuvre is often described as a 21st-century interpretation of Pop Art: grand, compelling, and inextricably linked to the visual culture of consumption and mass communication.
After graduating from the California College of the Arts, Rousso began his career in advertising and graphic design, where he developed a keen eye for visual language, iconography, and the ephemerality of information. This experience remains at the core of his artistry today.
Rousso is best known for his monumental works in which he enlarges, distorts, and elevates the everyday. He uses techniques ranging from painting and collage to digital processing and sculpture in thermoplastic. Familiar themes in his work include banknotes, newspaper pages, candy wrappers, and advertising images—objects normally discarded without a second thought, but which he transforms into imposing works of art that reveal the value and transience of material culture.
With his so-called flat depth approach, he plays with the paradox of two- and three-dimensionality. His artworks appear flat like a poster, but through sculptural distortion, they acquire a monumental presence in space. In this way, he challenges the viewer to consider what is real, tangible, and valuable in an age where information and objects circulate ever more rapidly.
Paul Rousso's work lies at the intersection of nostalgia and hypermodernity. He draws inspiration from 20th-century iconography but places it within a contemporary context of digital abundance and mass consumption. His art is exhibited and collected internationally and appeals to enthusiasts of Pop Art as well as conceptual and material art.
