  • About the artist

Jan van Loon (born 1938) studied at the Minerva Academy in Groningen and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague. His oeuvre spans a broad spectrum, both in technique and subject matter, and reveals an artist unwilling to be limited by a single style or theme.

He gained particular fame for his landscapes, in which he captures the moods of weather, wind, and space like no other. The skies, the mudflats, and the vast fields acquire a unique expressiveness in Van Loon's work, where realism and abstraction sometimes alternate. At the same time, he is versatile: in addition to landscapes, he painted countless portraits, including an impressive series of severely mentally handicapped patients, in which empathy and humanity are central.

His membership in the Northern Watercolourists underscores his mastery of this medium, in which he captures the atmosphere of the north with a precise brush. Besides watercolor and oil painting, he also worked on monumental projects: in 1988, he designed a large relief in the dike near Noordpolderzijl, where it is admired daily by many visitors.

Travel was also a source of inspiration. In the 1980s, a stay in the United States led to a series of paintings on the theme of Travelers: people in departure halls and station halls, waiting or rushing along, symbolizing modern humanity always on the move. A visit to Iceland resulted in a series of landscapes in which he navigates between realistic depiction and a more structural, almost abstract representation of nature.

Besides the grand gesture, Van Loon also finds beauty in the small, everyday: glasses on a table, a pair of sneakers, the interior of his studio, a pillow, or a simple sandwich. For him, everything harbors an image waiting to be depicted. This combination of an open mind, craftsmanship, and versatility makes Jan van Loon an artist who celebrates the richness of seeing in all his work.
