Paul Joseph Constantin (Constan(t)) Gabriël (1828–1903) was a pioneer of the Hague School, confessing to his versatility in the Dutch landscape. Born in Amsterdam in an artistic milieu, his development took place via an onregelmatig opleidingstraject tot a signs that vooral leerde door directe observatie van de natuur.

After a previous period in Oosterbeek and a long-term stay in Brussels, it was in a very familiar way with the ideas of the Barbizon sign, by Gabriël with his own signature. This year's land is in the Netherlands and in the open polderland, and the rivers are vast in the mountains. This work is noted for its presence in Helderheid: moles, bridges and boten fungeren as anchor points in uitgebalanceerde compositions.

The depictions are made in nature, they are carefully crafted in the studio, and the light is the last and most important element.

Gabriël has created an oeuvre in the form of a beautiful landscape that has been brought to life with its essence - a verstilde, an abstract harmony of light, ruined in the foreground.
