  • About the artist

Paulus Jozef Reinhard, born in Utrecht in 1929, is a Dutch sculptor, medalist, and draftsman who developed his artistry in the post-war period, a time when both innovation and tradition were strongly present in the art world.

Reinhard trained at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam, where he mastered the classical techniques of sculpture and drawing. Early on, he adopted a figurative approach, in which humans and animals take center stage. His work is characterized by careful modeling and a clear attention to anatomy and character, but also by a restrained, understated expression that gives his sculptures a timeless quality.

Besides his sculptures, Reinhard developed into a gifted medalist. His medals and medals demonstrate the same attention to detail and form, often achieving a monumental appearance on a small scale. Within this field, he successfully combined tradition and personal expressiveness, earning him a respected reputation in the world of applied arts.

As a draftsman, Reinhard captured his ideas and observations in direct and precise lines. His drawings are inseparable from his sculptural practice: they reveal the same quest for proportion, rhythm, and character.

His work has found a place not only in private collections but also in public spaces and museums. His sculptures can be found particularly in Utrecht and the surrounding area, often commissioned by schools, institutions, or municipalities. In this way, Reinhard contributed to the anchoring of figurative art in everyday life.

Paulus Jozef Reinhard is regarded as an artist who convincingly continued and enriched the figurative tradition in the Netherlands after 1945. As a sculptor, medalist, and draftsman, he managed to connect various disciplines, consistently placing the human and the personal at the center. His oeuvre reflects craftsmanship, dedication, and an understated strength that gives him a lasting place in Dutch art history.
