  • About the artist

Johannes Lodeizen was born on 8 October 1892 in Schiedam, into a wealthy merchant family. Although he remained in the shadow of the greater names of his time, he developed a remarkably sensitive and consistent oeuvre as a painter of still lifes, landscapes and interiors – with a subtle eye for detail, light and composition. His work exudes peace, contemplation and a modest, almost meditative refinement.

Lodeizen was trained at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, where he developed within the tradition of figurative realism. He had a preference for classical subjects: flower still lifes, window frames, furniture, shells and vases – but painted them with a clarity and atmosphere reminiscent of the old masters, without lapsing into imitation. Each object in his work seems to possess its own inner light.

His use of colour is soft but accurate, with a lot of attention to tonality. Lodeizen worked slowly and with great precision: form and shadow, line and reflection are thought through in detail. As a result, his paintings often have something tranquil, almost timeless – as if the world stands still for a moment between brushstrokes.

Although he remained outside the modernist movements and rarely participated in the public art debate, Lodeizen regularly exhibited in The Hague and Amsterdam, often at Pulchri Studio and Arti et Amicitiae. His work found a loyal following among lovers of subtle realism and classical painting.

He lived and worked most of his life in The Hague, where he continued to paint in peace and dedication until old age. Interestingly enough, he is also known as the father of poet Hans Lodeizen (1924–1950), who followed a completely different artistic path: modernist, fragile, short and fierce. Father and son – two generations of artists – connected by a keen eye for beauty, but each in their own language.

Johannes Lodeizen died on 11 December 1980 in The Hague. His oeuvre is relatively small, but is appreciated for its poetic precision. In a time of rapid change and experimental art, he held on to silent viewing – to beauty in simplicity, and to paint as a means of stillness.
