  Willem Sanders (Helmond, 1954) is een bekende schilder die woont en werkt in Amsterdam en in Montesiglio, Italië. Sanders studeerde aan het TeHaTex Möllerinstituut (1975-1980) en volgde een studie programma bij het Whitney Museum of American Art (1980-1981).
  Zijn werk bestaat uit landschappen en portretten uitgevoerd als tekening, aquarel of in olieverf. In de jaren tachtig brak hij echter juist door met grote abstracte werken bij bekende galeries zoals Galerie The Living Room.
  Sanders concentreert zich op de legitimiteit van het schilderen als discipline. Hij benadert dit vanuit een diepe kennis van kunsthistorie en filosofie. Hoe overbrug en overschrijd je de paradox van het temporale en vernieuwende versus het streven naar een permanente tijdloosheid? Sanders wil meer zijn dan een postmoderne commentator op het al dan niet legitieme van de schilderkunst.
  Hij was departementshoofd aan de Ateliers, Arnhem en geeft les aan internationale instituten zoals de kunstacademies van Den Haag, Braunschweig, Xiamen en Oslo.
  Werken van Sanders zijn opgenomen in de collecties van het Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, het Haags Gemeentemuseum, het Rijksmuseum Twenthe, het Stedelijk Museum ‘s Hertogenbosch, het Lentos Art Museum in Linz, Oostenrijk en tal van institutionele collecties in binnen – en buitenland.
  Zijn werk wordt internationaal geëxposeerd. Onder andere in het MOMA, New York en hij nam deel aan de biennales van Sao Paulo, Istanbul en Bari.
  In de jaren tachtig won hij een aantal belangrijke prijzen waaronder: de Buning Brongers prijs (1984) en de Sandbergprijs (1986).
  
  
• About the artist

  Willem Sanders (b. 1975, Breda) is a Dutch visual artist whose work explores the boundaries between memory, perception and reality. With a background in architecture and a fascination for lost spaces, Sanders creates paintings, installations and light objects that feel like fragments of a forgotten dream.

  His breakthrough came in 2009 with the series Silent Rooms, in which he painted abandoned interiors on a large scale, built up from dozens of layers of transparent paint. Critics praised his ability to make emptiness tangible and to give silence its own tone. Since then, his work has been exhibited internationally, from the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam to galleries in Berlin, Kyoto and New York.

  Sanders’ style is subdued but layered. He often works in series and is guided by themes such as disappearing landscapes, post-industrial melancholy and the architecture of memory. He uses old techniques such as tempera on panel, but does not shy away from modern media — in his recent work he merges video projections with analogue painting, leading to poetic confrontations between time and image.

  In addition to his autonomous work, Sanders is active as a teacher at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam and he supervises young artists in residencies and masterclasses. He is known for his thoughtful approach and his ability to help others find the essence of their work without imposing his own vision.

  Willem Sanders lives and works in a converted water tower on the edge of Zeeland, where he seeks out the silence to create — true to his lifelong search for the unseen.
