Chang Xugong, born in 1957 in Tangshan, Hebei Province, China, is a prominent Chinese artist known for his unique approach to contemporary art. He graduated from Tangshan Normal University in 1980.

In 1994, Chang moved to the Yuanmingyuan artist enclave near the Old Summer Palace in Beijing. This community of radical young artists sought social and artistic change, which had a significant impact on Chang's artistic development.

Chang is often associated with the Gaudy Art movement, a term coined by critic Li Xianting. This movement criticized the "get-rich-quick" mentality that emerged in Chinese society in the 1990s following Deng Xiaoping's economic reforms.

Chang's embroidered portraits of figures from both the upper and lower social strata reflect this critique, evoking the gaudy advertisements of the period and referencing the bright colors of folk arts such as embroidery and woodcuts.

His work has been exhibited internationally, including in 'Mahjong: Contemporary Chinese Art from the Sigg Collection' in Bern, Switzerland, in 2005, and in solo and group exhibitions in China, Germany, and Australia. Chang currently lives and works in Beijing.
