  • About the artist

    Jan Heppener was a Dutch painter, draftsman, and lithographer, active in the nineteenth century. He was born in 1826 and died in 1898. Heppener worked primarily in The Hague and is considered part of the Hague art tradition.

    He was best known for his landscapes, beach scenes, and cityscapes, particularly of Delft and Leiden. Atmosphere plays a central role in his work, with an emphasis on light, space, and the Dutch landscape. Heppener was strongly influenced by his friend and mentor J.H. Weissenbruch, a prominent figure of the Hague School.

    Jan Heppener studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague. His oeuvre aligns with the realistic and atmospheric painting tradition of the nineteenth century and is valued for his meticulous draftsmanship and compositional tranquility. His work is held in private collections and forms a recognizable part of Dutch art history.
