Jan Lucas van der Baan (1912–1996) was a Dutch artist and art teacher, closely associated with the Groningen art world of the twentieth century. He trained at the Academie Minerva in Groningen and later at the Rijksnormaalschool voor Tekenleraren (National Normal School for Art Teachers) in Amsterdam, where he further developed his skills. After graduating, he returned to Groningen, where he worked as a drawing teacher and simultaneously began to develop his artistic career.
Between 1933 and 1940, Van der Baan was a member of the Groningen artists' association Zig-Zag, a progressive group that sought to promote innovative ideas in the visual arts. In 1941, he joined De Ploeg, the influential artists' association that had strongly influenced the image of the northern art world since the 1920s. Within this collective, he found kindred spirits and a platform to further develop his work.
After the Second World War, Van der Baan exhibited annually with De Ploeg, making a significant and consistent contribution to the association's image and continuity. His art, which often sought a balance between expression and structure, reflected both a personal quest and the broader post-war innovations in art.
In 1964, Van der Baan co-founded the Grafisch Centrum (Graphic Center) in Groningen, giving a boost to graphic art in the city and creating space for experimentation and collaboration. In this way, he underscored his role as a bridge-builder between education, art practice, and the artist community.
Through his combination of artist, teacher, and organizer, Jan Lucas van der Baan left a lasting impression on the Groningen art scene. His work and dedication contribute to his name remaining linked to the rich tradition of De Ploeg.
