Marion Duursema is a contemporary Dutch artist and educator based in Amsterdam. She is best known for her delicate yet expressive charcoal drawings and paintings, in which subtlety and intensity coexist.
Working primarily with charcoal, Duursema explores the human figure, emotion, and inner landscapes through a restrained but highly sensitive visual language. Her drawings are marked by soft tonal transitions, layered textures, and a careful balance between presence and absence. Figures often seem to emerge from — and dissolve back into — the paper, creating a sense of intimacy and quiet tension.
Alongside her artistic practice, Duursema is active as an educator, where she guides students in developing both technical skill and personal expression. This dual role is reflected in her work, which demonstrates a deep understanding of material and process, combined with an openness to experimentation and vulnerability.
Her paintings extend this approach into color, maintaining the same lyrical quality found in her drawings while introducing a broader emotional range. Across her oeuvre, Duursema’s work invites close looking, rewarding attention with nuanced, contemplative imagery.
