  Born in Guangdong, China in 1972, Chen Fei abandoned his hometown in the Pearl River Delta – often known as the experimental laboratory of ‘Reform and Opening’ and the industrial hub of China, at the forefront region of its economic development – and came to Beijing to pursue his artistic career. His works reveal an artist struck by the impact of globalisation and the rapid growth of wealth in China’s new market economy. In particular, his works of fleshy human-like ‘blobs’ disintegrating under the weight of their greed and consumer desire, reveal his response to the social inequity and wealth disparities in this newly aspirational society.

  Chen Fei, nato nel 1972 nel Guangdong, in Cina, è un artista contemporaneo il cui lavoro espone la tensione tra globalizzazione, consumismo e disuguaglianza sociale nella nuova economia di mercato cinese. Ha studiato presso l'Accademia di Belle Arti del Guangdong a Guangzhou e ha conseguito un master in arte nel 1988, specializzandosi in pittura a olio.

  Nei primi anni della sua carriera, Chen Fei lasciò la sua terra natale, il Delta del Fiume delle Perle, epicentro della riforma economica e dell’industrializzazione della Cina, e si stabilì a Pechino. La sua arte riflette le profonde trasformazioni subite dalla società cinese attraverso la rapida crescita economica e l'ascesa di una cultura orientata al consumismo.

  I suoi dipinti raffigurano spesso figure umanoidi grottesche e carnose che crollano sotto il peso della loro avidità e del loro materialismo, mettendo a nudo gli eccessi e le disuguaglianze della Cina contemporanea.

  Con il suo stile provocatorio ed espressivo, Chen Fei rimane una voce influente nell'arte contemporanea cinese, esaminando criticamente le tensioni di una società in cambiamento.
