- About the artist
Mavis Smith (born in 1956 in Trenton, New Jersey) is an American painter, author, and illustrator known for her refined figurative realist paintings and her contributions to children's literature. She studied art and design at the Pratt Institute in New York and later furthered her studies in painting at the Seattle Academy of Fine Art.
Smith gained widespread fame as the illustrator of more than sixty children's books, including the popular Fluffy the Classroom Guinea Pig series. In addition to her work as an illustrator, she developed a successful career as a visual artist, focusing primarily on painting in egg tempera—a classic technique that allows her to build up exceptionally refined details and transparent layers of color.
Her paintings combine realism with a mysterious, almost dreamlike atmosphere. Figures often appear in serene interiors or surreal landscapes where fantasy and reality merge. Themes such as memory, hidden emotions, and human vulnerability play an important role within her oeuvre. The work of Mavis Smith has been exhibited in the United States and Europe, including in New York, Pennsylvania, the Netherlands, and Switzerland. In 2012, the Michener Art Museum organized a comprehensive solo exhibition titled Hidden Realities, which brought together various phases of her artistic development.
