  • About the artist

Denise Dutton is a British sculptor specialising in figurative sculpture that captures the essence and character of her subjects. Her work includes both human figures and animals, with a particular focus on horses.

    Education and Early Career

After a foundation course at Cambridge College of Art and Technology, Dutton went on to study figurative sculpture at the Sir Henry Doulton School of Sculpture in Fenton, Stoke-on-Trent. During this three-year course, she combined her interest in human figures with that of horses, leading to periods of study at veterinary schools in London and Cambridge. Her work was exhibited in London and Lichfield during her second and third years.

    Artistic Vision

Dutton aims to capture the soul, spirit and life of her subjects in her sculptures. She spends a great deal of time observing and sketching to develop a deep connection with her subjects. Her love of animals, particularly horses, is a constant source of inspiration in her work. She creates both large and small-scale sculptures, mastering the entire process from welding armatures to preparing wax for casting.

    Recent Projects

In December 2019, Dutton was selected to create a statue in honour of suffragette Mary Clarke in Brighton. Her previous experience creating sculptures of historical female figures played a crucial role in her selection for this project.

Denise Dutton’s dedication to her craft and her ability to capture the essence of her subjects have earned her a respected position in the world of contemporary sculpture.
