Ren Zhenyu
Born in Tianjin in 1976, Ren Zhenyu graduated in 1999 from the Tianjin Academy of Fine Art, where he currently works as a lecturer. His great talent has always been recognised and appreciated by renowned galleries and distinguished collectors throughout China, and increasingly all around the world. He has recently achieved fame in Europe through his distinct portrait series of historical and political icons. In his works, Ren plays with a wide spectrum of colours that are juxtaposed to create a unique expressionist interpretation of famous faces and experiments with texture built on layering to reinforce the portrayal of faces from different perspectives. He adopts a manner closer to Pop Art than to the currently dominant Chinese Neo-Realist style.

Ren Zhenyu was born in Tianjin in 1976. He graduated in 1999 from the Oil Painting Department at Tianjin Academy of Fine Art where he is currently working as lecturer. Since the beginning of his career his great talent has been recognized and appreciated by galleries and collectors throughout China. More recently he also has gained fame in Europe, especially through his portrait series of two historical icons: Andy Warhol and Chairman Mao.
In his work, Ren alludes to the profound political changes that have been taking place in China since Mao’s death (the same year the artist was born) and to the constant need for Chinese artists to connect themselves to the past.
