  • About the artist

Herbert Mehler (born 1949 in Steinau near Fulda) is a prominent German sculptor renowned for his monumental works in Corten steel. His sculptures explore the tension and harmony between precise geometric construction and the flowing logic of organic, botanical forms. Anchored in architectural clarity yet softened by natural rhythm, Mehler’s oeuvre occupies a distinctive space between the built environment and the living landscape.

Corten steel is central to his practice—not merely as a material, but as a concept. Its weathering surface evolves over time, allowing oxidation to become an active collaborator in the work. This process introduces a temporal dimension: the sculptures change with light, climate, and season, echoing natural cycles while retaining a rigorous structural presence.

Mehler’s large-scale installations are often conceived for outdoor and public settings, where they engage directly with their surroundings. Their scale invites physical encounter, while their open forms frame space, light, and movement. Whether situated in parks, architectural contexts, or open landscapes, his sculptures function as both autonomous objects and spatial interventions—places to look through, walk around, and reflect upon.

Through a refined balance of strength and vulnerability, order and growth, Herbert Mehler’s work articulates a sculptural language that is at once monumental and meditative, rooted in modernist principles yet deeply attuned to nature’s forms and processes.
