  • About the artist

30-year-old Stephen Langa grew up in Limpopo, a province in northeastern South Africa. He studied art in Pretoria and printmaking at the Artist Proof Studio before launching his creative career in Johannesburg, where he now has a studio in the Asisebenze Art Atelier on bustling Plein Street. Despite his young age, he has already participated in numerous exhibitions and his work is included in renowned art collections.

Stephen's motto: "The world is shaped by two things: stories told and memories they leave behind."

Many of his paintings are inspired by scenes from old masters, where he not only transforms the image but also adds a uniquely South African touch by working with models from his surroundings, such as family, friends, and acquaintances. He works with a mix of media, including oil paint, charcoal, pencil, and watercolor.

He says: “My charcoal linework and colors represent the mood of someone’s situation and current state of emotions, and the unpredictable journey of life, inspired by profound artists such as George Pemba, Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, and others.”

His paintings are enchantingly beautiful, with the almost always recurring white pencil outlines that Stephen subtly accentuates in his work.
