  • About the artwork
Yvonne Kracht's 1964 painting *Zee* marks her transition from abstract expressionism to geometric abstraction. The composition features textured hues of deep brown, black, and muted beige, arranged in precise geometric shapes reminiscent of machine parts. This work reflects Kracht's pursuit of combining rational structures with emotional depth, a defining aspect of her evolving style in the 1960s. Born in Rotterdam in 1931, Kracht studied at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague and the National Higher Institute for Fine Arts in Antwerp before joining the *Liga Nieuw Beelden*, a group dedicated to post-war artistic innovation. *Aarde* exemplifies Kracht’s unique ability to blend an abstract narrative rigor with textural complexity, cementing her legacy in Dutch modernism.

This early painting is a rare and powerful example of Kracht's material explorations—poised between gestural abstraction and sculptural surface. A museum-worthy addition to any collection of 20th-century European avant-garde.
  • About the artist

Yvonne Clothilde Julia Kracht was born on 7 January 1931 in Rotterdam. At a young age she felt attracted to art and creative expression. In the post-war years she developed into a versatile artist who did not allow herself to be limited by one style or discipline. Kracht worked as a painter, sculptor and installation artist and showed a remarkable originality and urge to experiment.

Her work is characterised by a combination of abstract and figurative elements and a strong interest in spatiality and matter. Kracht constantly investigated the relationship between form, colour and structure and in doing so sought the boundaries of traditional techniques. She worked with a variety of materials such as wood, metal, stone and textiles, and with them created objects and installations that often carried a playful and philosophical charge.

During her long career, Yvonne Kracht participated in numerous exhibitions at home and abroad. She was praised for her ability to create both monumental and intimate works that invite the viewer to reflect. Her art is often layered and contains references to nature, architecture and human emotions. In doing so, she managed to find a balance between reason and intuition in her own unique way.

In addition to her work as a visual artist, Kracht was also active as a teacher and mentor, making an important contribution to the development of young artistic talent. Her studio was a place of exchange and experiment, where she enthusiastically shared her knowledge and experience.

With her independent spirit and innovative work, Yvonne Kracht has acquired a permanent place in the Dutch art world. Her oeuvre testifies to a deep involvement with the world around her and a tireless urge to fathom the essence of form and space.
