  • About the artist

Daan Muhlhaus, also known as Daniel Mühlhaus (Dordrecht, 1907–1981), was a Dutch painter who left behind a recognizable and highly regarded oeuvre within the twentieth-century Dordrecht painting tradition. He gained fame with his atmospheric cityscapes, harbor and river landscapes, often inspired by Dordrecht and its immediate surroundings.

Largely self-taught, Muhlhaus developed a naturalistic, slightly impressionistic painting style, characterized by loose and precise brushstrokes and a distinct sense of light, atmosphere, and weather conditions. Water, quays, ships, and historical architecture play a central role in his paintings, in which he does not idealize the city but rather captures its everyday, tranquil beauty.

Daan Muhlhaus's work is valued for its authenticity and sense of its time, and constitutes a visual documentation of twentieth-century Dordrecht. His paintings are in line with the tradition of Dutch urban painters who approached the urban landscape with attention to craftsmanship, composition, and the effects of light.

Today, Muhlhaus's oeuvre remains highly sought after in the art and auction markets, where his paintings are regularly offered for sale and sought after by collectors of Dutch art and enthusiasts of Dordrecht cityscapes and riverscapes. His work is considered a representative example of regional painting in the Netherlands during the last century.
