  • About the artwork
Willem Vaarzon Morel jr. (1931)- Paardenmarkt Purmerend
Wim Vaarzon Morel jr. • About the artist

Willem "Wim" Vaarzon Morel jr. was born on 27 June 1931 in Amsterdam. He comes from a prominent family of artists: his grandfather, Willem Ferdinand Abraham Isaac Vaarzon Morel (1868-1955), was a well-known Dutch painter and illustrator, and his father, Willem Vaarzon Morel (1901-1982), also followed in the family's footsteps as a painter.

Wim jr. studied at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam, where he specialised in painting, watercolours, etching and lithography. In 1960 he received the silver medal of the Prix de Rome in the graphic category, a prestigious award that underlined his talent.

His oeuvre is characterised by lively depictions of horse markets, cattle scenes and harbour views. He had a special fascination for capturing the dynamic interplay between man and animal, which is reflected in his works that vividly depict the atmosphere and activity of markets and harbours.

In addition to his artistic career, Wim Jr. also contributed to the art world as a teacher and mentor for young artists. His work is included in various collections and has been regularly shown in exhibitions, both nationally and internationally.

The Vaarzon Morel family has had a lasting influence on the Dutch art scene, with several generations making their mark on painting. Wim Vaarzon Morel Jr. continues this tradition with his own unique contribution to the visual arts.
