  • About the artist

    Johan Hendrik Haanstra (1914–1991) was a great Dutch artist who worked on the beautiful art of portrayal, visual art and monumental art. In the naoorlogse periode ontwikkelde hij zich tot a belangrijke pleitbezorger van de integration van de kunst en architectuur—een gedie the nauw aansloot bij de Neitheropbouw van Nederland, waarin esthetiek en functionaliteit hand in hand moesten gaan.

    Haanstra's work is marked by a heroic mentality and a strong sense of perspective before ruin in context. Hij zag art never as a op zichzelf staand object, maar as a wezenlijk onderdeel van de gebouwde omgeving. In these monumental opdrachten—including wall reliefs, fine art and integrated sculptures—there is a harmonious dialogue between these materials, light and architectural structure.

    His oeuvre is reflected in a contemporary perspective on the balance of abstractions in Herkenbaarheid. The style is developed within the modernist tradition, the work is toegankelijk and connected with the men's size.
