Frans Smeers (1873, Brussels – 1960, Brussels) was a post-impressionist Belgian painter, who applied himself to genre painting, portraits, landscapes, still-lifes, beach scenes, harbours and marines. After a trained as a decorator, he entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Bruges (Belgium), where he studied under Jan Portaels and Joseph Stallaert.
At first his paintings were realistic, but from about 1920 onward he worked in a more illuministic style. Along with Jef Lambeaux and Alfred Bastien he founded the group Le Sillon in 1893. He drew the posters for the Salons of Le Sillon in 1899 and 1900. During World War I he stayed in London and in the Netherlands. From 1933 to 1946, he was a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels.
He had a number of exhibitions in Brussels, among others at Galerie Georges Giroux, Galerie Mommen, Cercle Artistique et Littéraire. Several museums in Antwerp (Museum voor Schone Kunsten), Brussels (Koninklijk Museum voor Schone kunsten; Museum van Elsene), Gent (Museum voor Schone Kunsten), and The Hague.
