- About the artist
Juan F. Béjar (born 1946) is a Spanish painter, born in Málaga, known for his intriguing and technically refined paintings in which beauty and alienation subtly intertwine. Self-taught, he developed a unique style that combines contemporary figuration with surrealist elements and a clear admiration for the painting of the Old Masters.
Béjar's work is often described as "poisoned sweets": seemingly harmonious and aesthetically pleasing images that, upon closer inspection, contain an unexpected, sometimes unsettling, or dreamlike undertone. His paintings often depict carefully composed figures and scenes in which realism and imagination intertwine, creating an atmosphere that can feel both timeless and slightly unsettling.
Inspired by the technical perfection of classical European painting yet simultaneously rooted in a modern visual language, Béjar creates works that invite the viewer to linger and discover hidden layers of meaning. From his native Málaga, he has built up an oeuvre that has received international attention and is characterised by craftsmanship, symbolism and a subtle tension between beauty and mystery.
